Chubby Hummingbird

Overview

Create your own Chubby Hummingbird to add a cute pop of color to your space, gift it to someone who loves birds, or make it to sell at markets. This is a quick make that is beginner friendly and low sew.

Abbreviations

  • R = round
  • MR = magic ring
  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = increase
  • dec = decrease
  • ( ) x __ = repeat the steps in the parentheses the number of times indicated after the x
  • FO = fasten off

Materials

  • Chenille yarn, size 5
    • Green
    • Red
    • White
    • Grey
  • Grey acrylic yarn
  • 6.0 mm crochet hook
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker
  • 10 mm safety eyes

Instructions

Tail

Using green yarn:

R1: MR, sc 6 (6)
R2: (sc, inc) x 3 (9)
R3-4: sc 9 (9) (2 rounds)
R5: (sc, dec) x 3 (6)
R6: sc 6 (6)

Do not stuff the tail feathers.
sc 3 through both sides of R6 to close the opening.

FO and weave in any loose ends.

Repeat the above steps two more times, so you will have a total 3 tail feathers.

Head/Body

Starting with green yarn:

R1: MR, sc 8 (8)
R2: (sc, inc) x 4 (12)
R3: sc 12 (12)

R4:

  • sc 4
  • change to red yarn, sc 4
  • change to green yarn, sc 4 (12)

R5: change to red yarn, inc 2, sc 8, inc 2 (16)

R6:

  • change to white yarn, (sc, inc) x 2, sc 3
  • change to red yarn, sc 3
  • change to white yarn, sc 3, inc, sc, inc (20)

Cut red yarn. Leave long enough tail to tie a knot at the last step of R8.

R7:

  • change to green yarn, sc, (inc, sc 2) x 2
  • change to white yarn, sc 7
  • change to green yarn, sc, inc, sc 2, inc, sc (24)

R8:

  • continue with green yarn: (sc 3, inc) x 2, sc 3
  • change to white yarn, sc 4
  • change to green yarn, sc, (sc 3, inc) x 2 (28)

Place eyes between R2-3, directly on top of the top corners of the red section. Make sure the eyes are 3-4 stitches apart.

Cut white yarn and tie to the end of red yarn from R6 on the inside.

Continue the remainder of the head/body with green yarn.
R9: sc 2, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 12, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 2 (32)
R10: sc 32 (32)

R11:

  • Add tail feather using 3 sc
  • dec, (sc 4, dec) x 4, sc 2

There is one sc left in this round, which will be used to crochet the next tail feather in R12. This sc will still count as part of R11. (27)

R12:

  • Add tail feather using 3 sc
  • Add the last tail feather using 3 sc
  • dec, (sc 3, dec) x 4 (22)

Tie the yarn ends of each tail feather together on the inside.

Start stuffing

R13: (sc 2, dec) x 5, sc 2 (17)
R14: (sc, dec) x 5, sc 2 (12)

Finish stuffing. Don’t overstuff the bottom so that it can remain flat.

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Insert this yarn tail through the front loops of R14. Pull tight to close. Weave in any loose ends.

To make the tail a little less floppy, cut a long piece of green yarn and use it to sew the 3 feathers together. Only sew on the part of each feather that is closest to the body.

FO and weave in any loose ends.

Beak

Using grey acrylic yarn and 3.0 mm hook:

R1: MR, sc 5 (5)
R2-3: sc 5 (5) (2 rounds)
R4: dec, sc 3 (4)
R5-6: sc 4 (4) (2 rounds)

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Insert this yarn tail through the front loops of R6. Pull tight to close. Weave the yarn tail back down to R1.

Use the yarn tail to sew the the beak between R2-3 between the eyes. FO and weave in any loose ends.

Wings

Start with green yarn:

R1: make a MR and make sure to leave a long tail at the start to use it to sew in the wing later, sc 6 (6)
R2: (sc, inc) x 3 (9)

Change to grey yarn:
R3-4: sc 9 (9) (2 rounds)
R5: (sc, dec) x 3 (6)
R6: sc 6 (6)

Do not stuff the wings.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Insert this yarn tail through the front loops of R6. Pull tight to close. FO and weave in any loose ends.

Repeat the above steps to make a total of two wings.

Sew the green part of the wings between R8-11, aligned with the middle of the head.
